Happy Christmas Jumper Day!

It’s Friday 13th and Christmas Jumper Day here in the UK. A fun and Christmassy way to raise money for children in need run by Save the Children. From pom-pom reindeer noses to flashing lights, Christmas jumper Day is when we all dress to impress.

We love to support a good cause and will be donning our holiday jumpers at Earth Rewards HQ today, BUT we’ll be keeping it green

Festive fast fashion

We were shocked to find out from Hubbub that almost 95% of jumpers from 11 high street and online retailers are made entirely or in part from plastic. This percentage is pretty concurrent with current figures about the materials used in fast fashion items.

The plastic in our clothes enters the environment, our seas and soil when we wash them and they shed microfibres. Plymouth University recently released the results of a study they ran on fabrics and how they impact the environment. They found that acrylic fabrics released five times more fibres than polyester-cotton blend fabric, with 730,000 microfibres released per wash. This is 1.5 times more than pure polyester.

In addition to this, in the run-up to the festive season, it is estimated that 12 million new jumpers will be bought, even though we already have 65 million folded away in our wardrobes. According to Hubbub, one-third of adults under the age of 35, buys a new Christmas Jumper every year; Of these jumpers, 2 out of 5 are work only once over the festive period.

Reducing your impact

Over the past year, we have seen brands trying to improve and reduce their environmental impact and this trend will continue thankfully. However,  there are a few things you can do to reduce your impact and still take part in the festive fun!

  • Get creative and customise a sweater you already own.
  • Wear last year’s sweater, It’s been almost 365 days ago that you last wore it, no-one will remember.
  • Swap with a mate – sharing is caring after all!
  • Knit your own using this free pattern from Hobbycraft.
  • If you do have to buy a new jumper, then buy a pre-loved jumper from a charity shop and try to buy jumpers made from natural fibres such as wool or cotton.

Share your jumpers

We want to see your Christmas Jumpers! Share your pics from the day with us on InstagramFacebook or Twitter and add the hashtag #greenxmasjumper.
